Scenario 4: The Fall of Cherbourg
Part 1 of Pat's "Hope I Finish it Before I Die of Old Age Longest Day Gameset"

The Longest Day (c)1979, The Avalon Hill Game Company

Gameset by: Patrick Hirtle (pyhirtle@try-net.or.jp)

As the title suggests, this set is the first part of a much larger set for Avalon Hill's The Longest Day. This is very much a work-in-progress; PLEASE report any errors/omissions you find!

1. Map and Counters

I've taken some license with the map graphics - even by 1980 standards, the original map was pretty gross. I think all the symbols will be easily recognizable.

The counters I've done as close to the originals as possible, although I changed the colour of the German counters somewhat, and also added a blue band to DD tanks to make them easier to spot.

2. Class Values

Lots of numbers - and here's what they mean:

a) For infantry, the numbers are: Attack-Defence-Movement-(Stacking)-Movement Mode. Movement Mode abbreviations are N = Non-motorized; M = Motorized; T = Tracked; RR = Railroad Artillery.
b) For artillery and tanks, there are three additional values: Range (artillery only); type/calibre; and number of tubes or vehicles. These last two values are for information only, and have no effect on play.

3. The .OPS File

Not much to say about this - units are in their general starting positions. There are force pools for US air units, game markers and US supply markers.

A note about Flip Definitions: Units have been flip-defined to their reduced sides, then to their remnant (if they have one), then back to their full-strength side. Units that have no reverse side 'flip' back to their front - i.e., when you attempt to flip them nothing happens - I flip-defined virtually all the pieces, even one-sided ones. When your units absorb losses in combat, it should be clear which sides have flip sides and which don't - if you flip a unit and the counter/values don't change; it's a one-stepper. And remember, only units with an inverted defense strength of 3 or more leave a remnant.

An exception to the above is the German at-start remnants - these represent units that don't normally leave a remnant, and are a 'special case' for the Cherbourg scenario, and have no defined flip side.

I hope you enjoy the set. If you have any questions or problems, please e-mail me and I'll respond promptly.
